The primary action of high frequency current is thermal, or heat producing. The heat produced by high frequency penetrates into the dermal layer of the skin, stimulates the skin and improve circulation. Because of its rapid oscillation, there are no muscular contraction. The physiological effects of high frequency current are either stimulating or soothing, depending on the method of application.
The electrodes for high frequency are made of metal or glass filled with gas such as neon. As the current passes through the glass electrode, tiny violets to reddish-orange sparks are emitted .
Their shapes vary, and the commonly used is mushroom shape. All treatment given with high-frequency should be started with a mild current and gradually increased to the required strength.

Application with High Frequency :
- Direct High Frequency : Sedative effect on sensitive skin (mild current), germicidal action on oily and acne skin when high frequency is applied with direct method.
- Indirect High Frequency : The client holds the electrode while the esthetician massage the skin. Indirect high frequency has toning and stimulating effect on the skin.
- Sparkling : a shower of sparks occurs when the electrode is held a fraction on an inch from the skin’s surface. The skin is stimulated by the sparks. Sparkling the pimple which has been extracted will destroy germs and bacteria and will aid in drying and healing the blemish. For sensitive skin, the treatment may be applied through a small, dry, cotton towel. Do not use nylon or synthetic fabric.
Note :
- Remove any metal object such as earrings, necklace and other jewelry from clients body before using high frequency.
- High frequency is not to be used on pregnant women, clients with pacemaker.
- While treating clients using high frequency, never use a lotion with alcoholic content.
